Meet the Website Team

Nadia Pandey

Major: English

Organization: Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA)

Why I Joined the class: As a child of immigrant parents, I am interested in migrant literature and advocating for immigrants and refugees. This class gave me the opportunity to do both!

Next Step: To Keep Volunteering to Advocate for Immigration Reform

Riley Bui

Major: English

Organization: Central American Resource Center (CARECEN)

Why I joined the class: As a first-generation American, I am highly interested in refugee stories. I was intrigued by the course description and also wanted to give back through service learning.

Next step: Graduate School

Terrence Lin

Major: English

Organization: California-Pacific Neighborhood Immigration Clinic (CAL-PAC NIC)

Why I joined the class: I was initially introduced to this class by a friend of mine, Jamie Buell, who is actually working on the Podcast team for the promotion of this book. I think I have always been really invested in myself, always only focusing on what I am doing for me. And even though it felt good knowing I was working on myself, I wanted to serve and give back to  the community, and have a greater purpose that is larger than myself. This quarter is probably the busiest I have ever been at UCLA, but I still really enjoy every second of this class!

Next step: Law school

Pauline Odabashian

Major: English

Organization: International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Why I joined the class: This class is so different from the other English courses that are offered at UCLA. Not only are we reading amazing works of literature, but we are also using what we learn in class within our volunteer work; which makes it so special.

Next step: Graduate school

Leia Yen

Major: English, Minors: Digital Humanities, Global Studies

Organization: San Fernando Valley Refugee Children’s Center (SFVRCC)

Why I joined this class: To think carefully, creatively, and constructively about the intersection between narratives and power. I’m grateful that I get to use my English undergraduate education to support the work of organizations that are making such urgent and invaluable stories heard!

Next step: Graduation

“To become a refugee is to know, inevitably, that the past is not only marked by the passage of time, but by loss—the loss of loved ones, of countries, of identities, of selves. We want to give voice to all those losses that would otherwise remain unheard except by us and those near and dear to us.”

– Viet Thanh Nguyen

"Refugees didn’t just escape a place. They had to escape a thousand memories until they’d put enough time and distance between them and their misery to wake to a better day."

– Nadia Hashimi
